Big Ten Golf Classic - May 17, 2008

This is the 26th year for the Big Ten Golf Classic charity golf tournament. Once again this event promises to be a fun day of golf and Big Ten cameraderie for all who participate while benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® and Big Ten Scholarship funds.

New Chief Illiniwek Portrayer Announced
Congratulations to Logan Ponce, a junior from St. Charles majoring in general engineering, who was announced as the 37th Chief Illiniwek in front of the Alma Mater statue on campus. UI sophomore Rob Zaldivar of Palatine was announced as assistant Chief Illiniwek.
They will be trained and ready to go once the Chief is allowed to resume his important role at sporting events this upcoming year.
Mendenhall Drafted by the Steelers
Rashard Mendenhall, Former Illini football player, was chosen in the NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Way to go Rashard!
Scholarship Winner Kelsey Householder
Kelsey Householder, a sophomore, grew up in Chandler, AZ. In 2005, she visited the UIUC where she found the campus atmosphere warm and inviting. After a year (2006) in General Engineering, Kelsey will change her major in 2007 from General to Civil and will focus on structual projects such as public community facilities. This summer Kelsey worked for a geotechnical construction materials testing company in Phoenix. In the fall, she will work in a campus engineering computer lab to help defray her college expenses.
Scholarship Winner Matthew Sugrhara
Matthew Sugrhara, a senior, spent part of his childhood in Illinois and first saw the Urbana campus at age 9. After moving to Phoenix at age 16, he conducted the usual in-state campus visitations, but his heart was at Illinois. matthew will graduate in December 2008 with a degree in Environmental Hydrology and Hydraulics, with aspirations to work as a water resource engineer in the Valley of the Sun. In addition, he plans to pursue a Master's degree in water resources at ASU. Matthew works as a research assistant on the UIUC campus for Strathmann Environmental Chemistry Group, as well as technology consultant for the College of Education.
